What does the future of Antarctica look like in a changing world and geopolitical climate?
Countries are currently meeting in Kochi, India for the 46th Antarctic Treaty Consultative Meeting.
Held every year, the purpose of these meetings is for the 56 states who are parties to the treaty, to carry out the collective business of implementing it.
But while the Antarctic Treaty — which enshrines the use of the continent for peaceful purposes only — has long been seen as an example of successful international cooperation, recent reports that Russia has been prospecting in the region have caused alarm in other countries.
The governance of Antarctica involves balancing conservation, research, tourism and economic interests in a unique and fragile environment.
Not only does a changing climate and more volatile world order impact the future of the continent itself, it also has far-reaching repercussions for the rest of the world.
