Unesco data shows that highly developed economies host more than three quarters of international students, despite producing less than one quarter of them.

Many countries experienced a dip in international student numbers in 2020 and 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, as many students returned to their home countries.

Not all had completely recovered as of 2022 — Australia, for example, had its lowest levels of students from China since 2016.
